US Navy acquires LCS Freedom-variant

Ray Mabus, the US Secretary of the Navy has named a Freedom-variant LCS 21 the 'USS Minneapolis/St Paul'.

The vessel can reach speeds of more than 40 knots and is 118 metres long. Its design features incorporate mission packages which will be updated for different regions. The packages can deploy both manned and unmanned vehicles.

The ship was named after Minnesota's twin cities due to their history of naval service. The ship will be the second of its name and will be built by Marinette Marine, part of the Lockheed Martin-led industry team.

The LCS variants, Freedom and Independence, have been developed by two teams led by Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics (GD).
